Many years ago....

----The tiny town of Maple’s Landing was once an amazing sight. Bustling with activity, it seemed as though the land had received the Harvest Queen’s blessed touch; and it had. From the highest peak of the tallest mountain, the Queen watched the town and made sure it became prosperous. There, it seemed the trees were the tallest, the water was the clearest, crops were the tastiest… and the people were the happiest. Recognizing their luck and blessings, the townsfolk would make the short trek every few days to the Queen’s Church, where they would scribble their ‘thank-yous’, their prayers, and their wishes on the “wishing wall”: a special, blessed wall that the goddess could hear. Every morning, the words would disappear, having been heard by her. This practice continued for many generations, and as long as it went on, the town thrived.

----Unfortunately, there was a great Calamity, and it seemed that all happiness stopped. During a summer, a fire spread and destroyed fields, crops, homes, animals and families. The villagers were devastated, and with the aftermath in their midst, the wishing wall practice ended. With it went the Landings’ prosperity. People just stopped visiting the Church; the wall was less and less used. Some people were actually angry with their Queen. How could she, an all-powerful being, allow their own to be hurt and die? How could she allow their food and livelihood to go up in flames? Dejected, the Queen slowly backed away from her duties. Despite being a deity, she had had secret hopes and dreams; all she wanted in return for her work was to hear the happiness that she was causing. Without it, she felt hopeless, and her sadness caused her to one day lay down, and never wake up. Without the happiness and thankfulness of her villagers, she fell into a deep sleep… and stayed asleep.

----Soon after her slipping, Maple’s Landing began to feel changes….

----At first, the fragrant winds over the prairies began to whimper out, until they stopped altogether. The windmills ceased to turn, and following this was a cloud cover that seemed to loom for most of the seasons.

----Then, the fires that once warmed the homes and lit the gas lights along the walkway began to flicker, and slowly fade until they were a dim reminder of what they once were. Tools were impossible to forge or improve, food was difficult to cook. Even candlelight seemed considerably dimmer.

----The once vibrant and quick river began to slow down, and eventually recede from its once-burgeoning banks. Its consistency became cloudy and polluted, and fish became more and more difficult to catch. At the distant shore, the tide seemed perpetually low.

----And the land began to falter. Fields that once yielded impressive harvests seemed choked with weeds virtually overnight. No amount of watering could seem to quench the dry land. Crops that did manage to grow were puny and unappetizing. It also seemed that the once-friendly animals became more and more hostile. The wild beasts that had once been kept at bay lurked in the shadows; and though they never really attacked, they always seemed to keep a watchful eye on the Landing.

----Lastly, the villagers began to change. One by one, the original inhabitants became sour, mean people. What used to be a populace of cheerful and friendly villagers became something much more sinister – they were cold to one another, cold to visitors as well. Others abandoned Maple’s Landing altogether, hoping to find a more suitable place to farm and live. A few families stayed, but they never quite seemed the same. Some of these villagers noticed the difference, and tried desperately to fix it: fertilizer on the crops, treatments for the water, fuel for the fires… but nothing seemed to stick. Life continued on for many years like this; the people who stayed were stuck, defeated, and the Goddess could not hear their cries.

----It seemed nothing could restore the Landing to its once peaceful, prosperous state. New citizens were shocked to find how desolate and cold the land was, and less and less people came to visit for annual festivals. The town became nothing more than a ghost of what it once was, dead and forgotten. It would take a miracle to save Maple's Landing.

----And a miracle was exactly what it got. One day, when a small group of volunteers were helping to repair the Cypress Church, a young man who helping out, took the time to write on the wishing wall and his wish was granted with the last remnants of magic in the wall. This small sign of the Queen was enough to rekindle the hope of the villagers, and they set out to alert the town of the happening, and called for everyone to meet at the tree dedicated to the goddess: Phinae's Tree.

------Will you help save the Landing?

--------------------Will you meet at the tree?
