Every time Cody worked for Olivia, it just reminded him more and more of just how much he was itching to, you know... not work for her. Well, it wasn't quite so much Olivia as it was just dealing with people all ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ day. Everybody always had some kind of problem, and if this town wasn't small enough that he knew he wouldn't see ever last damn one of these customers again, Cody would have straight up told half of them to go ♥♥♥♥ themselves by now.

By the time 7:58 hit, Cody said ♥♥♥♥ it, flipped the sign on the door to "CLOSED," and pulled a slightly crumpled pack of cigarettes out of his pocket as he meandered over to the corner of the building. As Cody shook a cigarette into his hand, all he could think to do to remedy the situation was to stay in school. Of course, he had no intention of leaving, but just thinking about standing behind that damn pastry display case made gave him that much more motivation to keep getting through those papers, and spending a whole summer dealing with the shitheads of Maple's Landing would be more than enough to get him through the semester.

Cody spent an almost comical amount of time fumbling with his almost empty lighter and banging it on his hand before he finally managed to get a flame to light his cigarette. He placed the lit cigarette between his lips and gave the lighter a few test flicks before he decided that it was officially out. With a small sigh, he tossed the lighter at the trashcan on the street corner and watched as it bounced off the side of the can and onto the ground. Awesome.

Oh boy, the last day of summer... One more day of pure relaxation and furious sweating that left him doing more laundry than necessary. No more waking up in a flurry of blankets and warm pillows that only made sleeping on the floor more appealing. However, it also meant that his life would turn its hands back to school hours, meaning less time to smoke...

Screw that.

Though Jared enjoyed being productive, there was something more serene in spending his days doing tasks he thoroughly enjoyed. Whether it was laying back in bed or tending to his family's needs, he preferred that over the mere thought of seeing those... children again. He shuddered at the thought. Instead, his mind would wander to his desires for the day, letting the sun trickle onto his body as he rested for the morning. Weary eyes, illusions of flower fields, endless packs of smokes...

Unfortunately, his dreams were cut by the alarming doorbell echoing through the room. He was relieved that it was just his parents inquiring about a few errands, with one essential task regarding the Harvest Festival. Knowing that they were pushing the social event onto him, he complied and was off to the urban areas of the Landing. It seemed like people preferred to take shelter in cold restaurants than spend the day outdoors, which he would have thought was a shame… but he felt that the heat deserved to be shunned for being overbearing. After walking through the few who cheered from basking in the sun and greeting those he knew, he finished the last of his checklist and found himself in the middle of Topaz Street.

It was evening now, when few shops still had open arms for any late night customers and the streets felt bare. Taking this as an opportune time, he let the handles of his plastic bags fall to his wrists and pulled out a pack of smokes. And as if cigarettes and lighters were constantly connected, he saw a lighter fly to a trashcan and fall to the floor.

Odd.

Jared's weird habit of shaking lighters compelled him to pick it up and try it out, but found it dead. Shrugging, he tossed it and noticed a familiar scent in front of him. There, a young man leaned against a building, smoking in solace. Hm, seemed like he wasn't the only one with the same idea. With another shrug, he walked past the stranger but settled on a spot near him. Getting his cigarette and lighter out, he asked a quick question before lighting his addiction. “Mind if I stay here?”

Cody idly watched as some guy walking down the street started to wander closer and stopped in front of the trashcan to pick up Cody's discarded lighter. The man clicked it the lighter a few times, and upon discovering that it was dead, he tossed it in the can. Cody fully expected the guy to move along with his life and keep on down the road, but no. He followed the man with his eyes as he passed Cody up and out of every damn building on Topaz Street, he chose to settle himself on the same one Cody was leaning on.

He almost forgot this was Maple's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Landing where people were way too friendly and never chose to mind their own ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ business. Cody briefly looked the guy up and down. At least he was cute. He was just waiting, though, for this guy to say something. Try to strike up a conversation like they all do. God.

“Mind if I stay here?”

And there it is, he thought to himself. And now, because of social conventions, he was required to talk to this guy at the very least until he finished his cigarette. All chances of him having 10 minutes of solitude flew out the window. Cody removed his cigarette from his mouth to shake the ash off the end and replied with a slight shrug, "It's a free country."

Cody stood there in silence for a moment, just smoking away, before he finally realized that he was kind of being a major ♥♥♥♥... Well, that and he was already craving another cigarette, and he didn't want to just light one off of the other. He had a certain set of standards, and that included at least looking like he wasn't planning on lighting up another from the beginning. Cody knew if he went back inside to grab another lighter, Olivia was going to pull him away into doing some bull ♥♥♥♥ whatever, so this guy was his only hope of getting to actually enjoy himself for once in his damn life while still being classy about it.

"You, uh..." he began, not entirely sure of where he was going with this. He had to make small talk... and he ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hated small talk. What was there to talk about? He didn't know. He glanced at the guy again before finally taking note of the plastic bags at his feet. "Shopping?" he asked, nodding slightly towards the bags.

Leaning against the brick wall, he adjusted his back properly for a more comfortable feel. He took a long look at the young man, making his thoughts wander to a sense of familiarity. It wasn't one of those "oh hey, childhood friend!" It was more of a "oh, I've seen this guy around," meaning that he must have been a local. He had never seen someone smoke along Topaz Street however, which was why he felt so curious. The blonde must have been younger considering his youthful face and stature, but there was a sense of maturity and angst in his eyes; Jared assumed that such emotions stemmed his smoking habit. After all, he was the same.

And like most smokers, there was a wittiness they had developed overtime. "It's a free country." was the stranger's response, shrugging away whatever conversation they had started. Jared chuckled, giving him a nod before he brought the lit cigarette to his mouth. Despite his preference for no small talk, there was something enjoyable about smoking with others.

Now there was silence. The smell was always a pleasantry to his nose, especially when there were two sources of this addictive scent. Usually, a whiff of it left him unfazed, but considering that this was his first smoke of the day, he was craving this productive time of the day. After all, he needed something to take the edge off. Jared also felt grateful that his smoking companion took solace in their mutual quiet behaviours as they continued to breathe in and out. It felt even more peaceful as the night sky changed with the clouds, new patterns forming each moment he looked up. Hm, why hadn't he gone here before?

Suddenly, the familiar voice came into contact with his ears, startling his shoulders forward. Turning to him, he looked on quizzically as he stuttered out a rather random question. ”You, uh… shopping?” He didn't seem like the type to be chatty, but he shrugged and went along with it. Plus, it didn't feel like a wasteful use of time since they were smoking. In response to the arbitrary inquiry, he lifted his lower arm up to gesture toward his plastic bags. With a small smile, he simply stated, ”Yup, I’m done.”

Nice way to kill the conversation.

Jared stopped himself from groaning from the thought, though the sound echoed in his head. He was just bad at the whole small talk, but it seemed like almost everyone in the Landing were so charismatic. Or maybe the guy was also trying to get out there despite the social anxiety he suffered? Wait, when did Jared start describing himself? Taking a look at the stranger’s cigarette, he noticed its miniscule size. Perhaps he was done with their smoke break… or did he need a lighter? Being the teacher he was, deducing problems wasn’t foreign to him. Maybe that was his empty lighter by the trashcan…

Gesturing toward the bin with a head nod, he took in more of his cigarette before asking, ”Was that yours? Did you need a light?” He brought his other hand up that held his lighter, shaking it to emphasize its capacity. He was always keen to help others, especially when it came to enforcing their smoking habits.

”Yup, I’m done.”

Cody nodded. Great... Was this guy pissed or something? He didn't sound like it, but... maybe he wasn't that talkative? Whatever.

Cody glanced back at his quickly dwindling cigarette and tried not to make his disappointment so apparent. He didn't even feel like he got through one fourth of what he did. What could he do, though?

”Was that yours?"

Cody glanced back up and followed the guy's gesture towards the trash bin. "Oh... Yeah. I'm a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ aim," he replied. Finally giving up on what was left of his cigarette, he pressed the end against the brick of the building behind him. This time, though, rather than flicking the butt at the trashcan, Cody actually walked over and discarded his cigarette in the ashtray sitting on top.

He turned around, and as he started walking back, the guy asked, "Did you need a light?” he held up his lighter and gently shook it.

Immediately, Cody began digging in his pocket for another cigarette. "Yeah, actually.... Thanks," he replied, cigarette now in hand as he reached out for a light. Once he was settled back into his spot on the wall and was able to enjoy a few draws of his cigarette, he half-heartedly lifted his hand towards the trashcan and said, "Thanks for picking that up... Like I said... Can't aim for ♥♥♥♥, and I didn't really feel like moving." He gave a weak chuckle. Actually, now that he thought about it, he should try to convince Olivia that they need a bench out here.

It seemed like his assumption was right as Jared's smoking companion followed his gaze and admitted what he had done. "Oh... Yeah. I'm a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ aim." It only made him chuckle again, though not in a way to ridicule the guy. He just liked the way he was blunt and non-caring; Jared could only act so aloof if the situation allowed it. His eyes trailed the stranger as he strode toward the garbage to rid of his dead cigarette. The gesture to prove his lack of aim garnered another laugh, making the man shake his head before looking down.

Speaking of dead smokes, it seemed like his was reaching its short end... of the stick. Jared took a mental note to use that joke in the near future. He was about to prepare for his next cigarette when he felt his lighter leave his hand, realizing that the guy was also ready for his next one.

"Yeah, actually.... Thanks." He nodded again, using his head as a primary communicator rather than his mouth. It's not like every word required a response back; he only deemed talking a necessity if there was no other way to get a message across. It seemed the opposite for the blonde as he continued to speak, though his words only made Jared smile over how relatable it was. Was this his past self if he went through with rebelling and dying his hair? "Thanks for picking that up... Like I said... Can't aim for ♥♥♥♥, and I didn't really feel like moving."

He used this opportunity to flick his own cigarette toward the ashtray, being sure to aim up to get the distance and aim right. Being a pitcher in baseball and being the sluggish innovative smoker he was, he had a lot of practice throwing cigarette butts so he could easily start another... or not have to walk. Feeling content as it went in, he started to light another smoke as he replied, "Just takes practice, if you're feeling that lazy. Guess it's both a skill and a crime." He laughed at himself, breathing in his addiction before speaking again.

"Is this the best smoking place around here? I kind of pegged this street as a 'smoke-free' zone." Jared was genuinely curious, as he wanted to know more about the "good areas" so he knew where to waste spend his time. He also commended himself for continuing the conversation; take that, social awkwardness!

"I don't see a sign," Cody shrugged in response. "Last I checked, Tycho never made some town ordinance or some ♥♥♥♥ like that." Cody wouldn't put it past the guy, though. From what he heard, the man was going nuts with power or something like that. Then again, how much of what those old coots who came in the shop said was really true? The other day one of them was talking about how he was on a date with Olivia, and she was clearly fed misinformation.

"But, I come out here all the time if that's what your asking... Or around back where there's no windows so I don't get ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at."

"I don't see a sign."

That was the response to Jared's question; rather, his attempt to be social. Admittedly, it left him feeling dejected due to the very nonchalant response. Was it a stupid question to ask, or did this stranger also have difficulty with conversations? He let the latter be his final thoughts on the matter, finally nodding back at the blonde after the initial shock. Breathing in the smoke, he looked up for a moment and admired the hazy sky. It was hard to feel optimistic, especially when there was a strange tension that he might have been imagining, but his lack of confidence was to blame. He was about to shut his eyes to try and shake off the negative feelings but was stopped by a familiar voice.

"But, I come out here all the time if that's what your asking... Or around back where there's no windows so I don't get ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at." Nodding to indicate that he was listening, he tried to latch onto the words and formulate some sort of response. Looking to the building he was leaning on, he figured that another question wouldn't hurt... at least, it wouldn't make him feel any more doubtful of himself.

"Oh, so this is your spot... sorry to intrude," Jared started off, bowing his head down out of his apologetic habit. "I'm guessing you work here, or you're some sort of regular? Seems pretty cool." And he would leave it at that, hoping something could stem from it. If not, they could just smoke in silence... That was normal for him, that lonely feeling.

"Oh, so this is your spot... sorry to intrude."

Cody glanced to the side. "No, really. You're fine," he replied, shaking the ashes from his cigarette.

"I'm guessing you work here, or you're some sort of regular? Seems pretty cool," the guy commented. What was his name again? Did he ever say? Cody didn't think he asked. It probably didn't matter for now, though.

"Eh. It's alright," Cody shrugged, looking back up at the building. "I mean, the desserts are pretty. I work here... and live here... so... You know," he shrugged. He didn't really sound like it, though. For all of the time he spent away from his hometown, he never could shake that Aspermont accent.

Now that he thought about it, though... He wouldn't mind getting out of here. The cafe', he meant. Ever since he got back from Aspermont, he just had this itch in his bones, and he couldn't figure out how to scratch it. That was perfectly logical, right? To want a bit of freedom? He had it during the school year, and it was nice. And it was also nice having all of the attention on him at home, but it was beginning to feel like a little much, always having Olivia there to fret over him... Then again, he did get a ♥♥♥♥ ton of free cookies.

"You from here?" Cody considered sitting down and leaning against the building for a moment. It sounded more appealing than standing around, anyway.

It felt tense waiting for a response, as if Jared was itching for something more. Perhaps it was the smoke clouding up his judgement, or his eagerness to finally socialize. Wrong time to do it. A sigh escaped his lips as the cigarette crumbled within his fingertips, the burning feeling like his own dying confidence.

"No, really. You're fine."

Those nonchalant words widened his eyes, alarmed by something so relieving. Though it was a simple statement, it felt like an invitation to proceed with their straightforward conversation. Jared offered a smile to the man, nodding his head in acknowledgement over the matter. Their exchange continued as the stranger responded, constantly shrugging to display his plain feelings over his position. Feeling short on words, he nodded again, ending the topic with just one comment. "Guess I should try the desserts then." A soft chuckle escaped his lips as the idea stuck to his mind.

"You from here?" Jared quickly nodded, taking no time to respond. "Yeah, born here, moved for a bit, back here... nothing special. I guess I never explored the streets at night too much." He paused for a bit, looking up at the darkness that overshadowed them. "I, uh, teach here now." He stopped his words as he realized that he revealed too much. His last comment had no correlation with the question, but that's what sociable people did to carry on a conversation, right? Did this guy even want to be involved? What even was his name?!

Cody nodded along as his new friend (Could he even call this guy his friend? Maybe a buddy. Does that imply more than friends? Acquaintance?) explained his living situation with unnecessary detail. So he was from here. Cody had noticed a specific pattern that cropped up with the locals. They always got super into the politics and Phinae this and Tycho that. Cody was pretty sure that they never stepped foot outside of the commonwealth, but even that seemed pretty far for these people. Past Greenfield is more like it. Maybe since this guy moved around, though, he wouldn't be that bad.

He wasn't even sure what was so great about this place anyway. All it really had going for him was that it had Olivia and Dante. Well, and the mountains looked pretty.

"I, uh, teach here now." the other guy continued, actually catching Cody's attention.

"Oh, that's cool. What subject?" Cody shook the ash from the end of his cigarette and gave it a thoughtful look before deciding that he would, indeed, sit at the base of the wall. "I'm a student at Greenfield University."

The nerves that once consumed Jared were now floating away with the last of his cigarette, letting his addiction calm him down. He would have felt anxious waiting for a response from his smoking partner, but the reassurance from his former words let him be at peace. Though names had yet to be exchanged, there was some sort of comfort shifting into the atmosphere. The night air felt pleasant and stable. Now he could concentrate on breathing in the smoke and relaxing.

As he finished his little spiel about his life, he was startled by the quick response. "Oh, that's cool. What subject?" The stranger seemed genuinely curious, sitting down as he spoke once more. "I'm a student at Greenfield University." That too caught Jared's interest, letting his mind wander to his alma mater. "Greenfield, huh? What do you study? I used to go there too; it's a nice place," he stated, smiling as memories came to his head. That's where he had met Jake, his forever feline companion... he never failed to make him happy.

Snapping out of his daze, he realized he never answered the first question and nodded his head apologetically. "Oh, sorry, I uh, teach middle schoolers. Not a particular subject, just a variety of them. It's also... nice." His cheeks were stained with a light pink hue as he felt foolish for repeating a very simple comment. Jared still wasn't the best with words. Hoping to distract from his inability to speak, he flung his burnt cigarette into the garbage and...

"Greenfield, huh? What do you study? I used to go there too; it's a nice place," the guy replied, but Cody could only shrug.

"Eh. It's alright. Not the dream school, but it's practical... I'm a geology major, so..." Cody watched his cigarette dwindle dangerously close to the butt for a moment before he continued on. "So... You said you were a teacher, right?"

"Oh, sorry, I uh, teach middle schoolers. Not a particular subject, just a variety of them. It's also... nice."

"God. Good luck to you, man," Cody replied. He could hardly imagine being stuck in a room full of middle schoolers day in and day out without strangling them. They all thought they were the ♥♥♥♥. And yeah, they were ♥♥♥♥ alright, but they weren't the ♥♥♥♥. "I didn't realize schools around here work like that... But I mean, I guess it's a small town." Cody finished his cigarette and walked over to put the butt out on top of the trashcan. He glanced in the window, figuring he should probably get back soon.

"Well, uh... I gotta get back," Cody began, jabbing a thumb towards the shop door. "Nice talking, though... I'm Cody, by the way. Don't think I ever gave you my name." He gave the guy a small, friendly smile and held out his hand. It was a small town, right? He was bound to see this guy again.

There was much more to his smoking partner than Jared thought. Initially, he enjoyed their unspoken mutual agreement to keep their conversation simple. Then, they shared little facts about themselves before getting to the topic at hand: Greenfield and teaching. Somehow, his uninteresting life had compelled the stranger to inquire even more, perhaps developing a path of friendship to walk down along. For that, he was grateful; his own self growth seemed to take a little step forward as he now felt more comfortable with small chitchat.

The blonde shrugged at Jared’s comment about Greenfield, admitting that it wasn't the best school. Agreeable, but he found that he wouldn't have gone to any other place than there. Geology was his major, inciting a surprised expression on his face; an o-shaped mouth and slightly wider eyes. Back then, it wasn't a very common practice, though “back then” wasn't very long ago. ”Good luck,” was all he said, a small smile lining his lips.

Those words of hopeful fortune were exchanged back when he explained his occupational status. There was a mix of sympathy and remorse in his eyes for Jared, probably understanding the whole debacle of dealing with children. He chuckled in response and nodded his head in thanks, continuing to listen to his words.

"I didn't realize schools around here work like that... But I mean, I guess it's a small town." ”Yeah, there’s no need for a big staff… I'm pretty lucky I was able to snag a position.” He looked up at the sky then closed his eyes for a moment, pondering about the gratitude he felt for the people in this town; if it wasn't for the connections he made, there would be no job.

When his eyes fluttered back open, his attention immediately went to his friend (it seemed more appropriate to say that than stranger). His finished cigarette was a representation of their burnt out conversation, though for these two smokers, it simply meant there would be another smoke. In this case, another conversation. "Nice talking, though... I'm Cody, by the way. Don't think I ever gave you my name." Seeing his straight face uplift slightly made his smile grow a little more as he finally introduced himself. “I'm Jared. Call me Jay, it's uh, been nice talking to you.” There he went, saying “nice” again. How was he a teacher?

Before he went to shake his hand, Jared reached into his pocket. Turning back to his partner, he gave him a firm grip to show how content he was. When he took his hand back, he left his lighter in Cody’s hand. “Uh, here. For your next smoke break.”

“I'm Jared. Call me Jay, it's uh, been nice talking to you."

"Yeah, you too," Cody replied, giving Jay a handshake. When Jay dropped his hand, though, he left something behind. Cody curiously looked at his hand and raised his eyebrows at the lighter sitting in his palm.

“Uh, here. For your next smoke break," Jay explained, and Cody smiled as he stuffed the lighter deep in his pocket.

"Thanks, man," Cody gave Jay a little friendly nod. "Should come stop by sometime. Could always use some company." That was the truth. There was literally nothing on Earth that was more boring than a slow day in the shop. "Later, man," Cody gave Jay a small wave before he disappeared into the shop. He hadn't had that talkative of a smoke break in a long time. Not that that was a bad thing. Jay was a cool guy at least. Couldn't say that about a lot of the people around here.

Still, though, wiping down the tables would probably be only slightly more bearable tonight.
