Winter was a brutal season - harsh winds, intense weather, and a stressed out school community. For the teachers at least.

Jared had experienced long nights learning new points in the middle school curriculum, as well as marking late homework from lazy students. The pace of his class had become slow and tedious due to their passion going toward the holidays rather than the school days. His smoke breaks became more frequent (when appropriate, of course) and the wrinkles on his forehead almost seemed like a permanent mark. There was much frustration boiling up in him and it would not be long until it became an active volcano. Was the last leg of the year always this pressuring, or had his memory failed him at a despicable time?

On the bright side, there was something worthwhile in such a crazy period. Being the productive man he was, he found short joys in his completion of work, even if it meant tiring his hand out putting circles on students’ work. At the end of the day, it meant more time to rest, read, or adore his precious feline companion Jake. Nothing could compare to those awards, so he relented through the adversities of this tiresome season.

Today had been another day of trudging through the light snow, calling for wool layers and a thick jacket to lay over himself. He went through the normal obstacles before work; helping his elderly neighbour, shoveling out mounds of snow, and dealing with his loving Jake. Unfortunately, the school aspect that came afterward was slightly problematic. The rebels of his class thought building a snowman out of dirt, school supplies, and snow would be hilarious, especially when its melting properties could cause people in the hallway to slip. Admittedly, he was amused by the prank, though that was a secret he would never share; however, for it to disrupt the creative flow of the school had irritated him enough to give the troublemakers a huge scolding that lashed out to other students. Simply put, it was not a good time at work.

And to add to his pain, his time outdoors were prolonged by the needs of his family – typical errand runs that only felt more mundane from the jarring weather. Jared struggled with the icy roads, thankful that there was some grip on his boots to support him. He simply flinched at the way others fell in comical ways, as there was not much to lighten his mood. The only thought that had really brightened his spirits was the idea of his warm home where he could snuggle up to his cat. With that, his sour face had straightened to a nonchalant expression as he strolled through the shopping district to buy groceries and medicine. It was a routinely visit so it did not take him long.

However, what would happen on his way home would be a mystery… relating to a tree?

Heather White
Winter 7 | Mood: Needs Coffee | Outfit! | Tag: @hani

Working with animals all day was a lot more exhausting than-- well, actually, it's just as hectic and tiring as anyone would expect! Heather knew she was more than equipped and prepared for the responsibility, but the emotional toll it took on her was the worst. With a hand full of cats and dogs that needed to find forever homes, Heather just wanted to make it easy and keep them for herself. She was growing attached to animals she knew she wouldn't be able to keep. They all deserved better. A nice big farm house for them to romp around in. Lots of room to run and play. Someone who could give them all the love and attention they needed.

Oh, but how she wanted to be that someone!

With the pups tuckered out from their long walk, and the cats all snuggled up for a siesta, Heather finally found the time to go run out on a quick coffee break. She knew there was a little cafe right down the street, and she'd been looking forward to a warm drink all afternoon. She grabbed her scarf, and hesitated... does she really need to bring her coat? I mean... it's like a block away... Nah. Just leave it. She could deal with the cold for a moment.

Placing the 'Out To Lunch, Be Back Shortly' sign on her door, and quickly locking up the shop, Heather wrapped herself up and scuttled her way towards the cafe, carefully eyeballing the ground below her for ice. Forgetting how clutzy she was, she managed to slide slightly on a little patch only a few feet away. Thankfully, she caught her balance against a tree! Thank goodness, that fall could have been--

"Mweooor!"

Heather glanced up in the tree and made direct eye contact with a cat. Heather quietly gasped, and tried to reach towards the little feline.

"Hey, sweetie, it's okay! Are you stuck...?" She tried to gently persuade the cat towards her, but didn't seem to be getting anywhere. In fact, the cat didn't budge... as expected. "Come here, sweet baby..." She spoke softly, trying to stand on her tip toes to get closer.

The winds had gotten stronger as Jared neared the end of the business district; he assumed it was from leaving the building-heavy area, which had created some sort of shelter before. Nonetheless, he was surprised that his trek back home had taken no time at all! Mid afternoon, the clouds still full of light... he chuckled at the sudden idealism in his mind. There had to be something missing from today.

Sliiiiiiiiii..p?!

And there it was. The sound of boots lightly grating ice had caught his attention, only because it was nearby. Looking toward the source, Jared saw a petite girl with short hair stumble along the path; luckily, she clutched onto a tree instead of suffering any damages. Relief escaped his lips, but being the helpful man he was, he still wanted to inquire if she was okay. He slowly made his way to her, being careful of his steps on the frozen ground. It would be no good if both were unable to get anywhere! … Except, there wasn’t much to avoid and he questioned whether it was the ice that made her slip, or her own feet. He shook away the judgement and carried on, his pace faster after the realization.

Once he had approached the woman, he was about to tap her shoulder when he suddenly heard her speak. "Come here, sweet baby..." The more he got to know about this stranger, the odder she seemed! No, but his parents told him to be open-minded, especially in this day and age where people were more… outrageous with their thoughts. He braved on a smile and tapped on her shoulder, quickly asking before he changed his mind about this ordeal, ”Hello miss, are you o -”

Meow.

Was that… was that a cat? Was he speaking to a cat person!? Was she a bundle of cats in disguise!? Now he was the one with absurd thoughts, though he was glad he caught himself before expressing such shock. He simply stared on, his forehead bunched in wrinkles of confusion. Meow. There it was again, though this time it sounded eerily familiar and from afar, more so from above him… Feeling genuinely curious, he looked at the tree hovering the pair. Just branches full of powdery snow, its edges icy and crackling. He motioned his head forward, then to the side, looking for the source, and to his remorse it was…

”Jake!” He cried out, moving past the girl and grabbing the tree. He set his hands above him, trying to reach high so there would be a very little gap between he and his cat. Seeing that darkened fur and striking blue eyes had confirmed what made those purrs all too familiar to him. His own cat was here, shivering and desperate for help yet unaware of what to do! Worry filled Jared’s eyes, his fingers desperately reaching for his feline companion. All he could do was speak in a manner unknown to many people in his life. ”Jake, love… please come down, it’s cold and I know you hate being alone… I’m so sorry I couldn’t come sooner, I’m here now, love…”

Luckily, he complied and moved swiftly, being careful to land his little paws onto his owner’s hands. Jared promptly cradled him in his arms, getting the scarf from his bag to wrap around his pet. He was ready to dash when he remembered what had brought him here. The girl. Feeling his cheeks become a little more rosy from something other than the cold, he turned toward her and gave a sheepish smile. Phinae, this was so embarrassing. ”Hey, um… thanks for trying to get him down. Are you okay – I saw you trip earlier, I, uh, hope you didn’t hurt yourself.”
