Jo Thibodeaux

Winter 18

@hani
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jo couldn't have had a more sour look on her face if she tried as she slumped into room 104 for detention, and upon seeing the look on Mr. Flore's face, her mood only grew fouler. She as 5 minutes late, she was woken up at 7:00 AM on a Saturday, and she totally didn't deserve to be here. One look at he detention slip could tell you that much. Under the reason for her receiving a detention, Mrs. Baker wrote: "Inappropriately protecting Motham city."
It wasn't even like she did anything bad. Kinda. At recess, she climbed up the batting cage behind the home plate at the kickball field, and she was sitting at the top, crouched down, and was scanning the schoolyard for opportunities to dish out vigilante justice. When Mrs. Baker found her, Jo tried to explain that she was Catgirl and that she had to do her dad, Commissioner Jordan proud. Mrs. Baker didn't think it was funny.
It wasn't even like this was the worst thing that anyone's ever done. Just last week, Julien and Harry got two detentions because one of the 8th grade teachers found out about their stupid game of Hide-and-Go-Poop. All the kids knew about it, but no one was willing to tell on them or explain it to the teachers.
Or there was that time that Jenna asked Mr. Crowley, the P.E. teacher if they could watch the Olympics in class, and when he said no, she called him a communist. That was was kind of funny, though.
And then her detention two weeks ago was really dumb. Mrs. Baker gave them busy work, Jo finished (although, it was sloppy work), and so she pulled out a book of silly pictures of cats that she found at the library and started showing it to Jimmy who was sitting next to her. Of course, she was the one who got in trouble and not him. That was how it always seemed to go.
The point was, of all the things to get a detention for, she didn't even deserve to be here. Mrs. Baker was dumb, and this whole thing was dumb. Jo didn't exactly mean to make a scene when she thumped her backpack onto the ground and plopped into her chair with her arms folded, but it still happened. Hopefully, she could just fall asleep, and then everyone would be happy.
Why was he here?
The morning started with many disgruntled mutters and swears, as Jared had to get accustomed to the darkness of 6AM. The season made it harder to wake up early, and to be honest, the previous night left him up later than normal. Today was already starting off so well. He didn't even bother to wear his usual semi formal attire for school — he was going for detention, no reason to dress up, and he wished there was no reason for him to be there. But there was, unbeknownst to him, and off he went with some buttered toast in his mouth to make the 7AM arrival. Of course, more distressed grunts were followed when he met the icy winter winds. Fantastic.
Even though his detention attendee would be coming an hour later than him, he was told to prepare whatever he could as punishment. Nothing serious, maybe just one of the oh-so helpful suggestions his teasing colleagues gave him: homework, chalkboard writing, dead silence… anything Jared thought would be suitable for Miss “Jo” Thibodeaux.
It was torture enough having to be at school, on a Saturday, especially with the troublemaker he was exhausted with.
Such a thought made him go back to pondering about the main issue at hand: why was he chosen? Was he in trouble — did he mess up his grading? Oh no, was it from those tests he didn't bother to double check because everyone had basically failed? Did the principal find it too mean to just write off students like that? It wasn't his fault, it was the changed curriculum! Sentences began to form in his mind, stirring together to create a compelling argument if that was the case. Otherwise, the other reason could simply be the faculty taking turns over who does detention… it would make sense, considering his last name started with an F… if the list was going down alphabetically… why couldn't he have a last name starting with Z!?
Finally getting to the school sent him over the edge - he could not handle the rest of the day if he didn't have a damn smoke. 7:02… whatever, he had plenty of time to kill. Even in the bitter cold, the taste and aroma of his cigarette calmed him down. It only reminded him of the remainder of the coloured grass he had back home, which he would surely use once this detention was over. He really couldn't wait for the end of the day.
It was now 8AM. Seated at the big desk in the room, he watched the clock intensely to make sure it had only been an hour since he got there. It was also the hour when Jo would arrive and yet… There was no sound of hurrying footsteps or doors being pushed open. Just silence. His irritation grew as the hands on the clock moved without hesitation, further emphasizing how late she was. Only 5 minutes had passed until she came in, Jared’s face a frustrated mess that she seemed just as aggravated by to see. Telling by her dramatic entrance with a thump and a hmph, they had the same mood. He sighed, looking down at his plans for the day that were unkempt and rushed.
Time to start.
”Alright, so… Attendance. Jo Thibodeaux?” he called out dully, looking her way with dead eyes. Goodness, he was so tired and aggravated. Poor Jo. ”Would you like to tell the class why you're here today?” He gestured to no one in particular, trying to amuse himself with the joke he just made. Seriously, poor Jo.
Jo Thibodeaux
Mr. Flores was sucking Jo's soul from her body. She could feel it. Her spirit was being ripped away from her person, and it was all because of the dead look in his eyes. Well, maybe not just because of that, but it wasn't helping at all.
”Alright, so… Attendance. Jo Thibodeaux?”
Jo folded her arms across her chest and stared at Mr. Flores with a blank look and said nothing.
”Would you like to tell the class why you're here today?” Mr. Flores asked, waving his hand at the empty room.
"Nope." Jo was dead inside. "Can't tell people nothin if they're not here." Okay, maybe she wasn't dead inside enough to lose her sass. Not that it was Mr. Flores's fault that she was stuck here, but since he was stuck here, too, he was going to get the brunt of Jo's butthurt. To further prove her defiance, Jo slumped forward in her seat and rested her head on her folded arms, burying her face into the darkness her arms provided. She dared Mr. Flores to disturb her nap time.
